Head rounded in dorsal view; antennae widely separated; interantennal scale-ridge of long scales overlapping frons; vertical hair-tufts sometimes present. Antenna about three-quarters length of forewing; scape slightly flattened and concave ventrally. Labial palpus fairly long, length about twice diameter of eye. Forewing veins 5 (M2) stalked with 6 (M1), 7 (R5) and 8 (R4), these veins not well developed. Hindwing venation reduced, only veins 2 (Cu2), 3 (Cu1) and 8 (Sc+R1) well developed. Foretibia with epiphysis well developed, about half length of tibia.
Larva
Feeding on a wide range of plants, primarily on decaying material but in a few species on living plants and in these cases sometimes attaining pest status.
