Vertex with 12 major bristles arranged in three transverse rows containing four bristles each.

Male

Frons usually broader than long but sometimes quadrate or longer than broad, median furrow present. Apex of C not turned posteriorly toward apex of R4+5. Sc well-developed or clearly evident; R1 and R4+5 not approximated apically; bases of M1 and M2 not approximated. Mid and hind tibiae with one hair seam. Scutellum with two, four, or rarely six bristles; when two present, two small hairs also present.

Female

Arista variable but usually longer than frons. Rs without a bubble-like modification at base. Frons usually wider than long; if frons longer than wide, lower interfrontal bristles usually convergent, not arising near anterior margin of frons nor at a considerable distance below anterior fronto-orbital bristles. Mid and hind tibiae usually with only a posterodorsal row of setae; if an anterodorsal row present, these setae weak. Abdominal tergite 6 sclerotized, but with a membranous emargination at middle of anterior margin.Ovipositor usually fleshy; cerci present, variable in size, generally directed ventrally. Lower interfrontal bristles usually inclined toward median line and variable in position.
