Antennal segments frequently with well formed though short necks, eye-bridge composed of 2-4 rows of facets; palpi usually three-segmented, often with distinct, brown, sensory pit. Anterior tibia with apical, specialized armature on inner side, in form of a true comb often composed of only 4-6 spines but in larger species containing 12 or more spines, generally, though not invariably clearly separated from rest of vestiture by a bare area; tibial spurs a little longer than width of tibiae, posterior four tibiae each with a pair of subequal spurs. Posterior wing veins and membrane without macrotrichia; R1 ending more or less opposite to, or basal to level of fork of M, costa produced for ½ or ¾ 'w'. Body hairs, including those of thorax, frequently short and pale. Male styles frequently with a strong armature of spines at apex, no whip-lash hair on inner surface.

Larva

With a posterior tentorial bridge. Spicules in the creeping welts absent.
