Adult

Head brown-coloured; pronotum light yellow/orange with black markings; abdominal segments not strongly banded; abdominal tergites with mottled pigment. Proternum without either spines or lobes; ovipositor relatively long; tympana present on both faces of fore tibia; inferior spines of fore and middle tibiae shorter; retrolateral apical spine of each middle femora large; superior retrolateral spine of middle tibia generally absent; with 2 apical spines to each hind femur. Males often with greatly enlarged head.

Immature

Resemble adults in later instars. Head: globose; eyes round, elliptical, or absent; antenna long, filamentous, palpi long and slender to short and stout. Thorax: pronotum rounded; lateral carinae absent; mesonotum and metanotum exposed. Abdomen: male circus simple, 1-segmented, often short and bearing only a few short setae; female ovipositor bladelike, small, reduced to 3 pairs of lobes equal in length to cerci. Tarsi 4-segmented, more or less flattened vertically, without lateral lobes; tibiae broad, robust; tibial spurs well developed, tooth-like, modified for digging.
