Wingspan 36 mm. Dark grey-brown, with bunched hairs on its head which look like a short pair of horns. On each fore wing is a silvery figure of eight with the two halves separated. Tiny silver 's' on the fore wings absent. Males have long orange hair-like scales on either side of the abdomen.

Larva

Up to 40 mm in length. Head capsule setae AF2 only just dorsal to frons apex; setae pair P1 on a level well dorsal to that of AF2; larvae of all instars with at most faint longitudinal bands of scobinations; later instars with longitudinal zones of irregular pale white lines, but overall effect is light green; early instars with black pinacula of seta SD1 on segments A1-A8 larger than pinacula of other setae; spinneret tapering (elongate-conical); later instar mandible with outer margin straight and only two inner ridges each with a subapical conspicuously darkened tooth. Prolegs absent on segments A3, A4.

Pupa

Green, often with brown markings which often resemble a face.
