Female

Body robust and not laterally flattened; bicoloured yellow and brown; forewings are banded. Head and pronotum sometimes with complex sculpture; maxillary stylets not crossing over each other just behind ocelli, without complex lateral convolutions, usually slender, often short and widely separated; antennal segments I and II not swollen ventrally; eyes not holoptic, distance between their inner posterior margins greater than distance between posterior ocelli; pelta eroded to 2 posterolateral sclerites and a poorly defined median longitudinal sclerite; tergites II-V each with 1 pair of posteriorly directed wing-retaining setae, on IV less than 0.3 times tergite width apart; forewings narrow, curved at base, without duplicated cilia, but with 4 transverse shaded bands.

Male

Similar to female but its fore femora bear a median tubercle.

Larvae

Abdominal segment X strongly sclerotized, elongate and tubular. LARVAE I. Pronotum with 6 pairs of setae; abdominal segment IX sclerotized only in posterior half. LARVAE II. Pronotum usually with 7 pairs of setae; abdominal segment IX sclerotized throughout.

Propupae

Antennae projecting laterally as short stubs; wing pads absent.

Pupae

Similar to propupae but wing pads (if adults are winged) present and antennae reflexed laterally on either side of head.
