Adult female moth 22 mm long, body dark reddish brown. Forewings dark reddish brown to almost black, with veins bordered by lighter streaks and an oblique cream line beyond the middle. Hind wings pearly.

Male smaller than female and less dark.

Mature larvae 50 mm long, white or pinkish brown, with a yellow shield on thorax and also last segment of abdomen from which a dark spine projects backwards. Larvae mainly feeds on male flowers.
