Diagnostic Notes
[Note: Images are of closely related species (B. monophthalma Clarke) and also to represent the genus record.]

The record of Batrachedra atriloqua being on coconut in Fiji is an uncertain record. It is not listed as a pest of crops in Stout (1982). Evenhuis (2007) records that it is the only species in Fiji.

This species is not regarded as a pest of coconut, and did not appear on the detailed list of potential pest species in Stout (1982).

However, Swaine (1971) provided information on Batrachedra arenosella as the coconut flower moth, and mentioned that there was a related species - B. atriloqua. He also stated that no control measures were needed for this species.

The application of the specific name arenosella for this tropical taxon is incorrect (J. S. Dugdale, pers. comm. 2012; who examined specimens in The Natural History Museum, London). The name arenosella applies to a species found in New Zealand. The butterflyhouse website illustrates the New Zealand species, and through the incorrect association of specific name suggests that it is the coconut moth found in the tropics as well and on different crops.
