Leaf rust. Yellow uredinial sori on both leaf surfaces, amber coloured telia may later form around uredinia, more commonly on lower surface of leaf.

Morphology

Aecia not known. Uredinia numerous, yellow, subepidermal, erumpent, circular to elliptical on both leaf surfaces, < 1mm in length, often about 0.25 mm diam., scattered to clustered, covering the entire leaf surface. Urediniospores orange-yellow contents, subglobose, ellipsoidal, obovoid to pyriform, aseptate, 23–36(–43) × 17–23(–27) µm, wall 1–1.5 µm thick, hyaline, echinulate, germ pores obscure (2 equatorial, Sivanesan 1970). Telia compact, dark brown, circular, <0.25 mm diameter, developing in a circle around one or more uredinial pustules, coalescing, mainly on lower leaf surface but also on upper surface. Teliospores yellow-brown contents, elongate-clavate with the lower cell being longer, narrower and paler than the upper cell, 1-septate, 50–80 × 13–21 µm, wall 0.75–1.5 µm thick at sides, 1.5–4 µm thick at apex, yellow-brown to very pale yellow-brown, smooth, with an apical germ pore; pedicel yellow-brown, up to 25 µm long, 5.5–9 µm wide.

Notes

This rust was not found during extensive plant disease surveys in the south Pacific in the 1970s and early 1980s, but it was found in Fiji in 1984 and later in other South Pacific countries. Most of the Pacific collections have only uredinia, but one collection from Fiji has telia, and they have also been found in Hawaii.
