Typical form cerambycid, 25 mm (male) and 35 mm (female) - the elytra of females is parallel whereas the elytra of males is distally tapered antennae 2.5 times the body length in males and 1 3 times the body length in females.

Beetle has about 20 irregular white spots on the elytra, antennae have 11 segments, each with a base of white blue females are larger than males, both are glossy black (after emergence of the tree is very blue-black ) and finely punctate.

Other species A. glabrapennis may be confused with is A. chinensis. The two species can be separated as follows:

Pronotum: A. glabripennis and A. chinensis, morph from China, both have tufts of black hairs on the pronotum whereas A. chinensis, morph from Japan, has two tufts of blue-white hairs on each side of pronotum.

Elytra: The base of elytra A. glabripennisis smooth while the base of the elytra of A. chinensis has numerous tubercles.

Scutellum: A. glabripennis and A. chinensis (as China) is black, A. chinensis (as Japan) has a white hair patch.

These larval Anoplophora glabripennis diagnostic notes were kindly provided by Tom Delmont (AQIS - Melbourne) who visited Steven Lingafelter May 2007 and returned with named references.

Most of these characters can be found in: Lingafelter SW & E. Richard Hoebeke (2002). Revision glabripennis (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae). Entomological Society of Was Hington.

- Samples should be more than 40mm in body length to use all diagnostic features

- It is not possible to distinguish the larvae of A. glabripennis of A. chinensis

- See Prothorax image back to the position of the anterior pigmentation

- See Dorsal abdominal images bulbs on segments 3 and 4 for the presence of two distinct rings

- The underneath of the head is weakly delineated or fused with the posterior margin of the gula.

- View images of the Sternellum to see the position of microasperites

- See image of the 3rd armed, symmetrical folds which compares to 2 armed, almost in the shape of a T on the back of Monochamus larvae.

- See Head above and side images of the antennae which are much longer than compared to Monochamus. In the 1st and 2nd larval stages, the projections and dorsal bulbs will not yet be formed, but for these larval stages you can use the pronotum dorsal pigmentation and anus form as indicators to separate Anoplophora from Monochamus.
