Adult

Ocellus vestigial or small. Labial palpus 3 ♂ to 4 ♀ times as long as diameter of eye. Fore wing: length 12.5-18.0 mm; R1> confluent with Sc; forewings straw coloured with dark patches but longitudinal streaks absent; some specimens very dark brown. Hind wing varying from dirty white to grey with a narrow smoky band along the margin (Bleszynski 1970).

Eggs are laid in overlapping clusters of 10-100 (average around 40). Mature larvae are 20-30 mm in length, setae bearing tubercles are dark brown, longitudinal stripes found in other species of Chilo are lacking in this species (Li, 1985).

Genitalia

♂ basal edge of the main part of the ventral arm of the aedeagus almost perpendicular to the stem; pars basalis absent; hairs stout; juxta plate broad with arms of equal length, short without subapical teeth; aedeagus with bulbose base projection small; row of small cornuti.

♀ 7th sternites without a heavily sclerotized plate; ostial pouch small, heavily sclerotized, well demarcated from ductus bursae; signum absent (Bleszynski 1970).
