Description: a wide, square carapace with three spines on each side, males have a distinctive fleshy, bulb-like structure at the base of the dactylus of the cheliped, there is finely striated ridge under the eye and lateral margin;

Size: to 30 mm wide;

Colour: variable - green, purple, orange-brown, red, with bands along its legs and red spots on the cheliped claws.
