Diagnostic Notes

Adult body length up to 4cm; body reddish brown with a pale-brown or yellow band around the edge of the pronotum; male cockroaches have cerci with 18 to 19 segments while the female has 13 to 14 segments.

Very similar to the Australian cockroack, Periplaneta australasiae, but can be separated from it by its larger size (adult American cockroach about 4 cm, Australian cockroach about 3 cm); the yellow markings on the pronotum of Periplaneta australasiae are clearly and cleanly defined whereas in Periplaneta americana the yellow and brown margins are not well defined; and Periplaneta australasiae has distinct light yellow streaks on the sides at the base of the wings, Periplaneta americana does not have similar yellow markings on the wings.
