Adult, Wingspan 46mm. Above, forewing black, with orange or brownish orange markings and white spots to the wing tips, hindwing orange with brown base and four blue-centred black spots near the margin. Beneath, forewing as above but paler, hindwing brown with yellowish markings and obscure spots to the margin.

Egg, white, mandarin shaped, 0.7mm, reticulated pattern of triangular pits.

Larva, mature larvae vary in colour from green to pinkish-red with darker mid-dorsal line.

Pupa, 14mm long, brown with darker markings, abdomen broad with upturned flanges, prominent dorsal ridge to thorax and abdomen.
