Tremex columba is widely distributed over the United States, though is most common in the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada.

Diagnostic Characters:

Tremex can be separated from other siricids by the short antennae.

Female body length about 25-30mm, male body length about 20-25mm, antennae short, sollen in middle, length as long as head and thorax combined; cross veins CU1 & 2 absent, cell 2A of forewing and base of 3A absent; labial palps 2 segmented; female body colour dull orange head and thorax, wings orange to dark reddish-brown, metasoma black with ocher-yellow bands and spots along the sides; male head and throax dark, metasoma almost completely orange.

Attacks a range of angiosperms.

Attacks beech trees only on the upper trunks and injured branches in the crown of the tree. This species is of little economic importance.
