B. tabaci - Caudal setae always stout, usually at least as long as vasiform orifice. Vasiform orifice inset from margin of pupal case by less than its own length (ie. vasiform orifice length > caudal furrow), sides of orifice almost straight.

 

B. afer - Caudal setae usually less than half length of vasiform orifice. Vasiform orifice usually inset from posterior margin of pupal case by at least its own length, its sides distinctly concave. Occasionally with distinct stippling on median area of venter as well as on thoracic and/or caudal tracheal fold.
