Body lengths, queen 20-22mm, worker 11-17mm, male 14-16mm. The queen has dirty orange coloured hairs at the end of the abdomen; workers have a white coloured hairs at the end of their abdomen.

 

B. terrestris queens and workers have the first segment of the abdomen after the waist black,  the second segment is yellow in the middle, the hind basitarsus has a strongly arched hind margin; and for males the antennae are short, the base of the hind basitarsus broadens with a distinct shoulder.
