Body length male 13-29mm, female 15-29mm; body colour: head and pronotum dark reddish brown, elytra with dark reddish brown or blackish brown with following yellowish brown markings: 1 narrow zigzag fasica as sub-base, 1 wide, more or less straight fascia just before middle and 1 oval or irregular spot on disc before apex; pronotum with 5 smooth and shining nodules, median one oval, anterior pair round but posterior pair of irregular form; antennae about 1.5 x as long as body in male and slightly longer than body in female, antennal segments 3-8 unispined at apex, segment 3 shorter than segment 4 in male but longer than segment 4 and slightly longer than segment 5 in female.

Distinguished from Phoracantha recurva as:

P. recurva: Elytra mostly cream to yellowish; dark brown areas primarily limited to rear third of elytra; long and dense golden hairs on underside of each antennal segment.

P. semipunctata: Elytra mostly dark brown; zigzag line bisecting cream-colored area in middle of elytra; no golden hairs on underside of each antennal segment.
