Adult body length about 3 cm; very similar to the American cockroach but can be separated from it by its smaller size (adult American cockroach about 4 cm, Australian cockroach about 3 cm); the yellow markings on the pronotum of Periplaneta australasiae are clearly and cleanly defined whereas in Periplaneta americana the yellow and brown margins are not well defined; and Periplaneta australasiae has distinct light yellow streaks on the sides at the base of the wings, Periplaneta americana does not have similar yellow markings on the wings.
