The genus Sceliphron comprises wasps in which the abdomen is very thinly stalked at the base. The body is marked with black and yellow and females make mud cells which they fill with spiders.

The genus is cosmospolitan, and has the following characters: 3rd maxillary palpomere swollen asymmetrically; female clypeal margin with 2 broad flat lobes separated by a small v-shaped notch; pronotum short, stigmatal groove absent; petiole more than 2x length of hind coxae; intersegmental membrane of tarsi with lamellate oval pads ventrally; front tarsal claws with only 1 tooth, middle tibiae with 2 apical spurs; 2nd submarginal cell trapezoidal, receiving both recurrent veins, hind win with a large vannal vein.

Sceliphron laetum body length c. 25mm; forewing span c. 30mm.
