Size 6-19 x 8-25 mm. Shell globular, with a high convex spire of 5-7 convex whorls with moderate sutures and a narrow umbilicus, partly obscured by the reflected columellar lip. Mouth round, with an internal rib which may be white or brown. Shell white or ginger, usually with dark brown spiral bands, which may be diluted, interrupted, blotched or fused, and sometimes lack pigment. Growth rings rather irregular. Species is very variable in size, shape and colouration of the shell. Animal light greyish or yellowish with black dorsum.
