Antennae 11-18 segmented; head generally subrectangular, long, narrow and with subparallel sides; sometimes dorsoventrally flattened; eyes unpigmented; mandibles strong and stout; left mandible with 3-5 and right with 2 marginal teeth. Pronotum subrectangular, as wide as or wider than head; anterior margin broadly incurved; posterior margin weakly to appreciably convex. Apical tibial spurs 3:3:3; tarsi 4-segments.
Imago
Antennae 12-17 segmented; anterior margin of 2nd marginal of left mandible equal to posterior margin of 1st marginal; pronotum flat, broader than head; media and cubitus weak, unsclerotised; media running medially between radial sector and cubitus, sometimes joining radial sector and again seperating to meet distal tip; apical tibial spurs 3:3:3; arolium present. Wings dark, with pimple-like nodules.
Immature
Well-developed immatures may be 6-8 mm long (larger in Neotermes). Cerci of 2 segments. Tarsi with 3 short basal segments and a longer terminal segment. Pronotum flat although the lateral margins may be depressed; usually as wide as, or wider than, the head. Left mandible with 2 conspicuous marginal teeth, the second of which is situated at, or anterior to, the midline of the mandibular face. Postclypeus not subdivided medially.
